Central Water Commission

Organization contains following Directorates and their activities are as under:

1. Hydel Civil Design (HCD) Directorate:

   HCD Directorate is engaged in, providing preliminary and detailed design consultancy services for civil design components of various hydro-electric projects, evaluation and vetting of specifications, technical aspects of hydro-electric projects, attending to special problems of projects, technical appraisal of DPR/PFR of various projects of the concerned states in respect of hydropower component and assisting BIS in preparation of design standards in respect of hydro power components. The residual work, if any, in respect of NT(PH) directorate engaged in providing detailed design and engineering consultancy services including evaluation of tender documents on technical aspects and vetting of technical specification for hydel civil components of NTPC projects, i.e. Tapovan Vishnugad H.E. Projects in Uttrakhand will be dealt by this Directorate.

2. CMDD Directorate:

   CMDD Directorate is engaged in, designing of gravity dams, sluice and its related components for river valley projects, vetting of designs and drawings prepared by other agencies, suggesting rehabilitation measures for concrete and masonry dams, technical examination of DPR/PFR of major projects in respect of gravity dam component, providing solution for special problems of projects and assisting -BIS in preparation and revision of codes for gravity dams and related structures. This Directorate would coordinate the activities of the Organization for keeping a watch on latest development/identification of stress areas particularly in Dam Design / Design of Hydro-Power Projects and identifying areas of Research in the sphere of activities and carrying out research in house/by other agencies by respective directorates by holding regular organization meetings in this regard and informing the details to the Committee on Civil and Hydro Mechanical Designs. This Directorate would submit agenda points to D&R Coordination directorate for consideration/deliberation of Members in a Commission Meeting. Suggest measures for possible realignment of Organization activities / capacity building of its Human resources etc.

3. Embankment Directorate:

   Embankment directorate is engaged in, design of earth/rock fill dam, tailing dams and their appurtenant structures, diversion structures and other components of dams, technical examination of embankment design aspects of PFR/DPR, assisting BIS in the preparation of various Indian Standards pertaining to River valley Projects (embankment dams) and providing solutions to special problems referred by the State Governments/Other agencies.

4. Gates Design Directorate:

   Gates Design directorate is providing preliminary and detailed design consultancy in respect of hydro mechanical structures such as gates, hoists etc. which include preparation of technical specifications, scrutiny of manufacturer's design and drawings and solution to special problems referred from time to time, technical appraisal of major projects and assisting BIS in preparation of relevant codes. The residual work, if any, in respect of NT(D&G) Dte., engaged in providing detailed design and engineering consultancy services including evaluation of tender documents on technical aspects and vetting of technical specification for dam and hydro-mechanical components of NTPC projects, i.e. Tapovan Vishnugad H.E. Projects in Uttrakhand will be dealt by this Directorate.

5. BCD Directorate:

   BCD directorate is providing consultancy in respect of planning & design of barrages, weirs, canals, canal falls, canal structures, cross drainage works required for irrigation, water supply and multipurpose projects, providing solution to special problems/rehabilitation works for various projects, technical examination of DPR/PFR in respect of barrages and different components of canal and assisting BIS in preparation of relevant codes.
