DETAILS OF WAINGANGA BASIN

The Wainganga (Pranhita) is one of the northward tributary of the river Godavari in its reaches. The Godavari is broken into 2 parts viz. Godavari and Wainganga (Pranhita).Thus each of these rivers will be deemed to be Independent River. The Wainganga River is considered an independent river of East Coast river of Andhra. The Wainganga basin lies between longitude 760 E to 800 53’ E and Latitude 180 48’ to 220 43’ N. The Wainganga has three principle branches viz. the Penganga, the Wardha and the Wainganga. The Wainganga basin comprises the catchment area of the river up-to confluence of Godavari.

          The Wainganga basin is in shape of a top draining the slopes of Satrapur, Gaikhuri,  Ambagad, and Ballahi ranges. Most of terrain of the Wainganga river up-to its confluence with the Bagh river is mountainous and the remaining is flat. The entire catchment area of the Wainganga basin is full of ridges, valley and low hill ranges. The Wainganga drains an area of 1,09,000 sq km (approx). Out of which 27.5 Percent is in Madhya Pradesh 66.1 Percent in Maharashtra and 6.4 Percent in Andhra Pradesh.

                       The Wainganga rises in the Seoni District of Madhya Pradesh at an elevation of 640 m above M.S.L. The total length of this river is 754 km upto the confluence with Godavari. In the beginning it flows eastward for a distance of about 175 km and then Southward for a length of about 100 km in Seoni and Balaghat District of Madhya Pradesh, further it flows a distance of about 479 km, in Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra before joining the Godavari .On the right bank five tributaries viz. the Bawanthari, the Kanhan, the Andhari, the Wardha and the peddavagu joins the Wainganga. On the left bank 5 tributaries namely the Bagh, the Chulband, the Garhvi, the Kobragarhi and the Kathani drains in the main channel.

                   The Wainganga basin lies in the medium rainfall zone and it is situated between the 900 mm and 1600 mm. Most of the rainfall is received during the south west monsoon from June to October. In the winter the minimum temperature varies from 70 C to 130 C. Maximum temperature varies from 390 C to 470 C. Month of May is the hottest month and the December is the coldest month.
