Under M&ERO, CWC, Bhubaneswar there are nine east flowing river basins spread mainly across the states of Odisha & Chhattisgarh and partly in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand & West Bengal.

1. MAHANADI BASIN

Among the 9 river basins Mahanadi Basin is the largest basin of this region. The total catchments area of the basin is about 1,41,600 km². Details of these are given below:

The river Mahanadi originates at an elevation of about 422 mts. above mean sea level near Pharsiya village near Nagri town in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. It is one of the major inter-state east flowing rivers. The total length of river from its origin to confluence of Bay of Bengal is about 851 Km, of which, 357 Km lies in Chhattisgarh and balance 494 Km in Odisha. There are 14 major tributaries of which 12 nos. join the river upstream of Hirakud reservoir and 2 nos. join downstream of Hirakud. Mahanadi is one of the most flood causing rivers of India.

2. BRAHMANI BASIN:

The Brahmani is one of the major inter-state east flowing rivers amongst the Peninsular rivers in India. The basin covers Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha states and drains an area of 39033 Sq. Km.

The Brahmani, known as the South Koel in the upper reaches, originates near Nagri village in Ranchi district of Jharkhand at an elevation of about 600 m. The total length of its run is about 799 Km. The principal tributaries of this river are Sankh, Tikra and Karo.

3. BAITARANI BASIN:

The Baitarani is one of the important east flowing rivers of peninsular India flowing eastward and joining the Bay of Bengal. The river rises in the hill ranges of Keonjhar District of Odisha near Mankarancho village at an elevation of about 900 m. above M.S.L. On its way, many tributaries join the river from both banks. Major portion of the basin lies in Odisha, except a small portion which lies in Jharkhand. The river is flashy in nature having a total length of 355 Km. The upper reach up to Anandpur is the hilly region. There is considerable fall in geographical gradient from RL 367 m. at Champua to RL 28 m. at Anandpur. 4. BURHABALANG BASIN:

The Burhabalang is one of the east flowing medium rivers situated in the northern part of Odisha state. It drains parts of the areas in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts of Odisha with a total catchment of 4800 Sq. Km. This is a flashy river having a source at an elevation of 800 m., and drops into the sea after traversing a total distance of 125 Kms.

5. NAGAVALI BASIN:

The river Nagavali is a medium sized east flowing river in peninsular India. It is surrounded by Vamsadhara in the North, Champavathi and Peddagedda in the South, Godavari in the West and the Bay of Bengal in the East. It drains parts of the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput of Odisha and Sirkakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh State. The total basin area is 9510 Sq. Km. and the state wise break up is as below:

The Nagavali originates near the Lakhabahal in Kalahandi district of Odisha at an elevation of about 1300 m. The total length of the river run is 256 Km., out of which the first 161 Km., are in Odisha and the rest 95 Km in Andhra Pradesh. The important tributaries are Barha, Suvarnamukhi, Vonigedda, Vegavathi and Relligedda.

6. RUSHIKULYA BASIN:

The river Rushikulya is one of the medium sized east flowing rivers in peninsular India. It is an important river of Odisha state and covers entire catchment area in the districts of Phulbani and Ganjam. The river Rushikulya originates at an elevation of about 1000 m. near Matabarhi village of Phulbani district and flows through Ganjam district before falling into the Bay of Bengal traversing a total length of  Km. The total catchment area of the basin of 7,700 Sq. Km lies in Odisha.

7. SARADA BASIN:

The river Sarada, an east flowing medium sized river, lies in the district of Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh. The basin is surrounded by Nagavali in the North, Gostani, Gambi Ramgedda, Megadnigedda in the East, Bay of Bengal in the South and Machhkund sub-basin of the Godavari in the West. The catchment area of the basin is 2665 Sq. Km. It rises at an elevation of 1000 m. and runs a distance of 122 Km. before joining the Bay of Bengal.

8. SUBARNAREKHA BASIN:

The Subarnarekha is one of the longest east flowing inter-state rivers. It covers large areas of Jharkhand and some parts of West Bengal and Odisha. It is bounded on the North-West by the Chhotanagpur Plateau, in the South-West by Brahmani basin, in the South by Burhabalang basin and in the South-East by the Bay of Bengal. The total catchment area of the basin is 18,951 Sq. Km.

The Subarnarekha river originates near Nagri village in Ranchi district of Jharkhand at an elevation of 600 m. The total length of the river is about 395 Km. The principal tributaries of the river are Kanchi, Kharkai and Karkari.

9. VAMSADHARA BASIN:

The Vamsadhara river is an important East flowing river between Mahanadi and Godavari. The basin lies in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh having a total catchment area of 10,830 Sq. Km. The state wise break up is as flows:

The river originates near Lanjigarh village in Kalahandi district of Odisha and runs a total distance of about 254 Km. before it joins the Bay of Bengal at Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. A number of tributaries join the river on both the sides.
